Your invoices in the structured format, without losing your evenings.
MakeInvoice creates your invoices, quotes and credit notes, and produces for each one a structured XML file in CII (UN/CEFACT) format — one of the two syntaxes used by the European standard EN 16931.

How it works
Three steps, no technical knowledge required.
The structured file is produced at the same time as your invoice. There is nothing to configure.
- 01
Create your invoice
Your clients, your line items, your VAT. The interface is that of a normal invoicing tool — because that is what you actually need.
- 02
We produce the structured file
MakeInvoice generates, in parallel, the XML in CII (UN/CEFACT) format, one of the two syntaxes used by the European standard EN 16931.
- 03
You send it to your client
Download the invoice and its structured file, and send them the way you do today. The XML file is the one your client's software can read automatically.
What you get
An invoicing tool, not a compliance project.
What the software does today, and nothing else. What it does not do is listed on the pricing page.
The structured file with the invoice
Every invoice you issue produces an XML file in CII (UN/CEFACT) format, one of the two syntaxes used by the European standard EN 16931.
Invoices, quotes and credit notes
The three everyday documents, each with its own numbering counter.
Your data stays yours
Hosted on AWS in London, under a European adequacy decision. Your invoices remain accessible from your account, the PDF of each one can be downloaded, and you can request a copy of your data at any time.
The timeline
Your deadlines, country by country.
The mandate does not land everywhere at once. And your enterprise clients will switch before your own deadline.

This table sets out your obligations, not the scope of MakeInvoice. Today, MakeInvoice creates your invoices, quotes and credit notes and produces the matching structured file. It does not receive your suppliers' invoices and does not transmit them through an accredited platform.
Informational table, last verified on 1 September 2026. It does not constitute legal or tax advice: check your own situation with your adviser or the relevant authority.

What freelancers ask us.
Does this really apply to me as a sole trader?
Yes. The French reform applies to every VAT-registered business established in France, including micro-entrepreneurs under the VAT exemption threshold. Only the issuing deadline changes with company size: September 2026 for large and mid-size companies, September 2027 for SMEs, small businesses and freelancers. The obligation to *receive* electronic invoices, however, applies to everyone from September 2026. MakeInvoice does not cover receiving today: it lets you issue in the right format.
Will a PDF sent by email still be valid?
No, not once the issuing obligation applies to you. Under the reform, an electronic invoice is a structured file (XML) that can be processed automatically and is sent through an accredited channel. A regular PDF, even signed, is not one. MakeInvoice produces that structured file for each of your invoices, in CII (UN/CEFACT) format; sending it to your client is up to you.
Is MakeInvoice an accredited platform?
No. MakeInvoice is invoicing software: it produces your invoices in the structured format expected by tax authorities and by your clients. It does not transmit them on your behalf through an accredited platform — you send the invoice yourself, as you do today. Connecting to an accredited platform is on our roadmap; it is not available and is not part of what you get today.
Which format does MakeInvoice produce?
One only: XML in CII (UN/CEFACT) format, one of the two syntaxes used by the European standard EN 16931. The other formats you will see mentioned — Factur-X, a PDF carrying the embedded XML, or UBL, the other syntax — are not produced by MakeInvoice today.
What happens if I am not compliant in time?
The law provides for fixed fines per non-compliant invoice, capped annually, and distinct depending on the breach (failure to issue in electronic format, or failure to transmit transaction data). The most immediate risk is commercial: an enterprise client already under the mandate will simply be unable to process your invoice. Applicable amounts are detailed in our guides, updated with each official publication.
Where is my data hosted?
On Amazon Web Services infrastructure in London (eu-west-2 region). The United Kingdom is no longer in the European Union, but it benefits from a European Commission adequacy decision: data can be transferred there from the EU without additional formalities. You can download the PDF of each of your invoices, and exercise your rights of access and portability by writing to privacy@makeinvoice.io.
Can I try without a credit card?
Yes. The Free plan lets you create unlimited invoices and issue five per month in the structured format, with no card and no commitment.
Your issuing deadline: September 2027.
Your enterprise clients switch before you do. Better to be issuing in the right format already.
No credit card. No commitment.
